Welcome and Notices

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

The world around us is full of beauty

We praise your name O God.

For the gift of life on earth

We praise your name O God.

Open our eyes to see your artistry Your image in all that you have made.

Where our praise is short or silent,

all creation sings out with joy.

Here we join creation’s song

We praise your name O God.

Prayers of Penitence

Let us ask God to have mercy on our land,

and to prosper the work of our hands.

Let us ask God to forgive our delusion of self-sufficiency so that we may praise him for his provision and goodness.

Lord, you give us this good earth,

yet we take your generous gifts for granted.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, you give us this good earth,

but we squander its rich resources.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, you give us this good earth,

but we fail to share your bounty

with all of your children.

Lord, have mercy.

Absolution

May the God of love and power

forgive you and free you from your sins,

heal and strengthen you by his Spirit,

and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Reading

Genesis 1 v 27- 2 v 3

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Prayers

God, Creator Of the Universe,

Of the earth and sea

Of the earth’s fruits and flowers

Of all humans, habitats and creatures Help us to value and care for your world in all its beauty and fragility.

In trust for you Creator God. Amen

Wake us, God, to thought and action to care for all of your creation.

Show us how we can turn the tide and ease the suffering caused by our misuse of the gifts you have given us.

Teach us to use our wondrous scientific and artistic gifts peacefully, for the good of all. Amen

We say together:

Creator God, you made the goodness of the land, the riches of the sea and the rhythm of the seasons; as we thank you for your gracious providing may we cherish and respect this planet and its peoples, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer:

Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

May God the Holy Spirit, who hovered over the waters of creation and formed the world from chaos, form us in the likeness of Christ and renew the face of the earth.

Amen.

Tend the earth, care for God’s good creation, and bring forth the fruits of righteousness. Go in the peace of Christ.

Thanks be to God.
