Verses from Psalm 24

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,

    the world, and all who live in it;

for he founded it on the seas

    and established it on the waters.

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?

    Who may stand in his holy place?

The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol

    or swear by a false god.

 

Confession:

“if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;” Romans 10 v 9

Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, whose face is hidden from us by our sins, and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts: cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires, that with humble hearts we may draw near to you, confessing our faults, confiding in your grace, and finding in you our refuge and strength; through Jesus Christ your Son. Amen

 

Absolution
May the God of love, bring us back to himself, forgive us our sins

and assure us of his eternal love

Reading:  Genesis 11 v 1-10
Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Prayers

O God, for the beauty and frustrations of the multitudes of language and the variety of your creation we give you thanks.
Grant us the courage to live with uncertainty and the honesty to admit when we don’t understand each other.

We ask for the power of the Holy Spirt to speak only words which build up and unite, wisdom in actions which fight immorality and injustice and humble hearts which give God glory always .

Amen.

 

Lord Jesus Christ, you are the name above every other name. Your name is like a fortified tower in which we can find safety and security. When we are troubled, we find peace in your name. When we feel weak, we can find strength in your name. When we feel overwhelmed, we can find rest in your name. Throughout our lives Lord, help us to rely on you. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

 

Lord Jesus Christ,
you taught us to love our neighbour,
and to care for those in need
as if we were caring for you.
In this time of anxiety, give us strength
to comfort the fearful, to tend the sick,
and to assure the isolated
of our love, and your love,
for your name’s sake.
Amen.

 

Lord’s Prayer:

Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, For ever and ever.
