Confession Christ the light of the world has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts. Let us turn to the light and confess our sins.
Lord of grace and truth, we confess our unworthiness to stand in your presence as your children. We have sinned: forgive and heal us.
The Virgin Mary accepted your call to be the mother of Jesus. Forgive our disobedience to your will. We have sinned: forgive and heal us.
Your Son our Saviour was born in poverty in a manger. Forgive our greed and rejection of your ways. We have sinned: forgive and heal us.
The shepherds left their flocks to go to Bethlehem. Forgive our self-interest and lack of vision. We have sinned: forgive and heal us.
The wise men followed the star to find Jesus the King. Forgive our reluctance to seek you. We have sinned: forgive and heal us.
Absolution May the God of all healing and forgiveness draw you to himself and cleanse you from all your sins, that you may behold the glory of his Son, the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Christmas Candle on the Advent wreath is lit
Reading Luke 2 v 8-15 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
This is the word of the Lord
Prayers
Lord Jesus Christ, your birth at Bethlehem draws us to kneel in wonder at heaven touching earth: accept our heartfelt praise as we worship you, our Saviour and our eternal God.
Christ you came to us from the womb of Mary. There was pain at your bearing, confusion in your rearing and astonishment at the man you came to be. We bring to mind now all who are in pain of the body, mind or soul, all who are confused by the events which surround them, all who this day will be sad and lonely and those who find no astonishment at the wonder of your birth. Amen.
Lord’s Prayer
Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.
The Peace Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to all in whom he delights.
The peace of the Lord be always with you... And also with you.
Song: The Saviour in a Manger
Communion Service The Lord is here.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is right to praise you, Father, Lord of all creation; in your love you made us for yourself.
In Christ you shared our life He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.
On the night he was betrayed, Father, we do this in remembrance of him: his body is the bread of life.
At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said:
As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy gifts make us one in Christ, our risen Lord.
With your whole Church throughout the world we offer you this sacrifice of praise and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven: Holy, holy, holy Lord,
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Prayer after communion May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others;
Blessing May the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds, the perseverance of the wise men, the obedience of Joseph and Mary, and the peace of the Christ child be yours this Christmas; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
