HYMN:  The Church’s One Foundation

The church’s one foundation
is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
she is his new creation
by water and the Word.
From heav’n he came and sought her
to be his holy bride;
with his own blood he bought her
And for her life he died

Elect from every nation
Yet one o’er all the earth
Her charter of salvation
One Lord, One Faith, One Birth;
One Holy name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses
With every grace endued.

Mid toil and tribulation
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
of peace forevermore.
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blessed
And the great church victorious
Shall be the church at rest.

Yet she on earth have union
with God, the Three in One,
and mystic, sweet communion
with those whose rest is won.
Oh, happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we,
like them, the meek and lowly,
on high may dwell with thee.

We come from scattered lives to meet with God.

Let us recognise his presence with us.

Silence is kept

As God’s people we have gathered:

Let us worship him together.

Almighty God,

you search and know us:

May we rely on you in strength

and rest on you in weakness,

now and in all our days;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Brothers and Sisters,

As we prepare to celebrate,

Let us call to mind our sins.

You made us to be one family,

Yet we have divided humanity.

Lord, have mercy

Lord, have mercy.

You were born a Jew to reconcile all people,

yet we have brought disharmony among all races

Lord, have mercy

Lord, have mercy.

You rejoice in our differences

Yet we make them a cause for enmity.

Lord, have mercy

Lord, have mercy.

Almighty God,

who in Jesus Christ has given us

a kingdom that cannot be destroyed,

forgive us our sins,

open our eyes to God’s truth,

strengthen us to do God’s will

and give us the joy of his kingdom,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Let us declare our faith in God:

We believe in God the Father,

from whom every family

in heaven and on earth was named.

We believe in God the Son,

who lives in our hearts through faith,

and fills us with his love.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit,

who strengthens us

with power from on high

We believe in one God;

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

READING: Luke 10v38-42
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,  but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

TALK by Lucy and  Neil

HYMN:  What a friend we have in Jesus

What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer

Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged
Take it to the Lord in prayer

Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer

Father, so many things still happen in this world that end up discouraging women who have committed themselves to serve you. There are those within our broader church and the universal church who still cannot see women as leaders.  We pray that you let your divine power be upon women that are devoted to serving you, in different capacities all over the world. Remind them to be courageous when the storms of life are against them.

 In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Gracious God, Thank you for all the women you have called to serve in this church, both in leadership and daily ministry.

We pray for all women who are leaders, or in the process of discerning their ministerial role within your church and for your kingdom.

Give us and them, listening hearts so that your words flow through them as they talk, teach, serve and lead. Amen.

Lord, we lift up those among us who are unwell, recovering from illness or surgery: Hilary Turner, Bob Holmes, Margaret Short, Pat Munford….

Embrace them with your love, and let them feel your reassuring arms of protection surround and strengthen them on this part of their journey with you. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

HYMN:  Be thou my vision

Be Thou my vision,
O Lord of my heart.
Be all else but naught to me.
Save that thou art
Be thou my best thought
In the day and the night
Both waking or sleeping,
Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my wisdom,
be Thou my true word:
Be thou ever with me
And I with thee, Lord
Be thou my great Father
And I thy true son
Be thou in me dwelling
and I with thee one.

Be Thou my breastplate,
my sword for the fight:
Be Thou my whole armour,
be Thou my true might;
be thou my soul’s shelter,
be thou my high tower;
O raise Thou me heavenwards,
great power of my power.

High king of heaven,
thou heaven’s bright sun
O grant me it’s joys
after victory is won,
Great heart of my own heart,
whatever befall
Still be thou my vision,
O ruler of all.

May Christ draw you to humility and worship,

And bring you to see God at work.

And may the blessings of our Lord Jesus Christ,

the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

be with you always, now and forever,
